Data Sources & Licenses
PrintMap3D
PrintMap3D turns real places into 3D-printable models using open geospatial data. This page explains where that data comes from, the licenses that apply, and what a downloaded model does and does not include. It is provided for transparency and is not legal advice.
Data in the 3D model
Two open geospatial sources can contribute geometry to a generated model. Both are fetched on our server while building the model.
OpenStreetMap (via the Overpass API)
Used for buildings, roads, railways, bridges, water, forests, parks, land-use areas and sports areas. Retrieved server-side through the Overpass API.
Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and is available under the Open Database License (ODbL). See openstreetmap.org/copyright and the ODbL license.
AWS Terrain Tiles / Mapzen (terrain & elevation)
Used for terrain and elevation. Retrieved from the AWS Terrain Tiles / Mapzen Terrarium elevation tiles — by your browser when the 3D preview is built on your device, and by our server when a model is built server-side. These terrain tiles are themselves built from multiple open terrain and elevation data providers, each with its own terms.
See AWS Terrain Tiles and the terrain data attribution list. Depending on the modelled area, the blended terrain may include:
- 3DEP, SRTM and GMTED2010 data courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey
- ETOPO1: DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NCEI
- EU-DEM: produced using Copernicus data and information funded by the European Union — EU-DEM layers
- United Kingdom: © Environment Agency copyright and/or database right 2015. All rights reserved
- Austria: © offene Daten Österreichs — Digitales Geländemodell (DGM)
- Australia: © Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia)
- Canada: contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence — Canada
- New Zealand: data from LINZ, Crown copyright reserved
- Norway: © Kartverket
- Mexico: source INEGI, Continental relief, 2016
- ArcticDEM: DEMs provided by the Polar Geospatial Center under NSF-OPP awards 1043681, 1559691 and 1542736
User markers
The heart / home / pin / star markers you can place are your own input. They are not third-party geospatial data.
Model images & model pages on this site
The model preview images on our landmark and place pages, the social preview (OG) images, and the curated model pages (including the 3D models they display and their downloadable files) are rendered from the same OpenStreetMap and AWS Terrain Tiles / Mapzen data described above. Each of those pages and images carries its own OpenStreetMap credit; API responses that serve map-derived data (feature overlays) include the attribution notice as an X-Attribution response header. Sharing a model means sharing a link that reopens the editor with your settings — it serves no stored model.
Browser-only map & search
These help you choose an area in your browser. They do not contribute geometry to exported models.
OpenStreetMap map tiles
The interactive map background is drawn with OpenStreetMap raster tiles, shown only in your browser to help you pick an area. They are not used by model generation, and are not included in STL, GLB, OBJ, 3MF or ZIP exports, nor in any page/image generated on our servers. Attribution is shown directly on the map: © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Place search (Nominatim)
Place search and reverse geocoding use OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service from your browser to find a location. This only moves the map — it does not enter the generated model geometry. See the Nominatim usage policy.
App & preview services
The app also uses the services below. None of them contribute geometry to exported models:
- Cloudflare Web Analytics — aggregate, cookieless page-view counts (no persistent visitor identifier; see the privacy page).
- Google Fonts — self-hosted from the build output.
- A 3D preview environment map (from the drei library, fetched by your browser from
raw.githack.com) — used only to light the in-browser 3D preview.
PrintMap3D is built with open-source software, some of which runs in your browser. See the open-source licenses & notices page for the full list.
What this means
- Generated models may include third-party open geospatial data.
- Downloading a model does not transfer ownership of the underlying map, terrain, elevation or geospatial datasets.
- Please preserve attribution where it is required.
- PrintMap3D provides generated 3D printable models, not raw geospatial databases.
Every tiled-export ZIP also includes a README_LICENSE.txt with these sources and links.
